I tend to do this roughly every two years as part of a hard drive replacement routine. Don't trust the things one bit.

Each time this gets quicker; I seem to need less and less software these days. So far am getting by simply with Firefox (+ add-ons), iTunes and a couple of helper apps (Adobe Reader, Realplayer & Flash Player). Oh, and the latest Java Runtime. And a printer driver. Think that's it.

@John - patience, I'll get round to it. Had to pause last night as I was having some problems with the CPU overheating. Think I need some thermal paste...
